How important is it to have my clubs fitted for me?
Very important. Every golfer delivers the club to the ball in a different manner. There are thousands of possible head and shaft combinations in the market and these can either enhance or hinder a golfer from reaching their potential.
How much improvement in my game can I expect when playing with personalised fitted clubs?
Studies have shown that, “eight out of nine customers who went through a custom fitting added an average of 21 yards off the tee and lowered their scores by as much as six strokes per round”.
What is Lie angle and can it affect my swing?
A measurement of the angle of the shaft coming out of the clubhead in relation to the grooves on the clubhead. If the lie angle setup is incorrect, you can expect to struggle with consistent strike and accuracy.
Lie angle has a direct effect on distance as well. When the lie angle is correct, maximum energy can be transferred between the clubhead and the ball. The lie angle is most important on irons because they make contact with the ground every time. You need to have your lie angles set up correctly if you want to hit solid shots that are on target!
What is shaft flex and how is it used in a fitting?
Shaft flex is the relative stiffness or overall bending property of a shaft. Manufacturers typically categorize shafts by ladies, senior, regular, stiff and extra stiff flex. Generally, using a shaft that is too stiff will produce a straighter shot, but with a loss of distance. A shaft that is too soft will generally produce a shot pattern that is more erratic, but the distance will be greater. Tempo and swing speed will determine the shaft flex that is right for you.
What is clubhead speed and why is it important?
Clubhead speed is the actual speed at which the clubhead is traveling just prior to impact. This is important information as a higher club speed will produce a longer shot upon solid contact. There is a direct correlation between clubhead speed and ball speed that is determined by how solidly the ball is struck. Higher clubhead speeds generally mean more spin on the ball and more bend in the shaft.
What is spin rate and how is it used in a fitting?
The spin rate is how many times the ball rotates in a given period of time. The unit measurement is revolutions per minute (RPM). Spin rate directly affects how the ball flies through the air. A ball that is rotating at a higher RPM, will stay in the air longer but not roll as much when it hits the ground. Conversely, a ball that is rotating at a lower RPM will not stay in the air as long and tends to roll out further. There are ideal launch and spin conditions for given ball speeds. Using launch monitor data, we can test your current and help identify your ideal spin rate.
What is the Smash Factor?
Smash Factor is calculated by dividing the ball speed by the clubhead speed. It is a way of understanding how efficiently you're making contact on the clubface as well as how efficiently the given clubhead is propelling the ball off the clubface. High Smash Factors will mean more ball speed. Game improvement clubs generally produce higher Smash Factors, but this can come at a cost to spin and consistency.
